Convert Jing SWF for Free (Updated 3/1/2012)

EdTech

Update: Jing Pro end of life announced. SnagIt is the new replacement. Read about it here.

For some time now, although not as long as others, I have been advocating the use of Jing Pro ($15). It’s a delightful tool that has made short work of the tutorial videos needed for ed-tech professional learning.
One of the challenges for those using Jing—not the Pro version that saves as both SWF and MP4—has been converting the SWF file generated by Jing to something editable. In fact, this was my chief objection against using Jing…the SWF format was impossible to convert. And, there was no place to host it except the Jing hosting web site.
The solution in the past was pay $15 and get the Pro version. Now, another solution (Windows only, no Mac or GNU/Linux solution exists that I know of and I’ve looked hard, unfortunately) exists. I found out about it thanks to Dr. Richard Smith. He wrote:

I saw your Jing recommendation on your blog (I teach Jing in my Interactive Distance Learning course) but I didn’t see this tip on how to easily convert Jing swf files to nice YouTube friendly mpeg files for free. If you haven’t already found “Moyea swf to mpeg converter” go to, http://www.moyeasoft.com/

…The free version puts a tiny logo in the upper left corner of the video. It is not objectionable at all. If this info isn’t on your blog already, your readers will probably really like to know about it.

Of course, while this is a free trial with no time limit, it does leave a small icon on the video. Some of its features:

  • Convert SWF to MPEG video (MPG & VOB)
  • Convert SWF to MP3 and AAC audio
  • Support MPEG-compatible codec of MPEG4
  • Support ActionScript
  • Support recording audio and ripping audio in an independent file
  • Perfectly convert embedded Flash videos (FLV) or linked Flash videos (FLV)
  • Perfectly convert complicated Flash files and completely comply with the rule of WYSIWYG with excellent sound quality and picture quality
  • Adopt Lower-Playback-Speed technology to achieve accurate audio and video synchronization and no frame loss
  • Adopt audio-extracting technology, instead of recording, to 100% keep original sound effect
    Support batch-mode conversion
  • Enable users to set the beginning and ending time for the created video and effectively control conversion process
  • FREE TRIAL WITH NO TIME LIMIT
