Converting #iPad CAF Audio to MP3 (EverNote and AudioNote)

A colleague at work recently introduced me to AudioNote, an iPad app that allows you to take notes and record audio at the same time. What’s neat about AudioNote ($4.99, although it’s also available as a free “lite” app) is that it synchronizes your typed or handwritten notes with the audio…and you can jump forward to that portion of the audio by tapping on the text.

For example, let’s say I’m recording an awesome conversation or presentation. If I sense the speaker is going to say something memorable or something I want to find easily, I can write something and it will allow me to “track” what’s been recorded at the moment I wrote it. Nifty, huh?

While I wouldn’t recommend AudioNote for iPad handwriting recognition—for that, I recommend this app, MyScript Memo (free)—it does fit a niche…I wish AudioNote developers would partner with MyScript Memo for handwriting recognition…this would make it a perfect app!

I also occasionally find myself converting EverNote audio. Thankfully, it’s pretty easy to open these audio files.

ENHANCING AND CONVERTING AUDIO FILES
After recording a recent presentation—United Way Coordinator meeting—I found myself trying to work with the audio file—Core Audio File with a CAF extension—created by AudioNote. I wanted to convert the CAF audio file created by AudioNote into something a little easier to work with (e.g. MP3, OGG) and share.

I thought this might be a problem to convert, but there are several solutions you can take advantage of such as the ones below:

  1. Audacity (FREE) - Thankfully, the free open source Audacity audio editor opens CAF audio files and allows you to save/export them to MP3 or OGG format (or whatever else Audacity allows). I also was able to open EverNote audio recording and enhance the audio to make it “louder.” (Note: For CAF files, Garageband on Macs will also do the trick!).

  2. Bigasoft’s CAF Converter ($35) for Mac and Windows - Only caveat about this are the limitations, which aren’t really elaborated on until you install the software and read the limitations:

  3. The maximum 5 minutes conversion of a more than 5 minutes file.

  4. With a less than 5 minutes file, you could only convert half of it.

  5. Switch for Multiple Audio File Conversions - You can use Switch—available for both Mac and Windows—to convert multiple CAF files.
