Moodle Tip - Embedding FLV and Other Media

EdTech

Problem -

Do you know how to embed a flash video into a moodle webpage? I don’t want to link to it or embed via an external player - I just want it to appear on the page. I read something about making sure that your admin has enabled the multimedia filter for .flv files in Site_Administration>Modules>Filters>Multi_Media_Plugins>Settings.

I actually want it to appear in a label, not a webpage but I guess that’s the same thing, right…sort of? I’ve tried all I know to do (html code, creating a separate webpage and then linking to that) but nothing is working for me.

Solution - Enable Multimedia Plugins

To display FLV and other video formats easily—although SWF appears to come up without problem—just enable your Multimedia Plugins. Simply go to the screen shown above:
**
Site_Administration>Modules>Filters>Multi_Media_Plugins

**And click on the eye that will enable. Then, click on SETTINGS for the Multimedia Plug-in…it will sort of look like what is shown below (click in all the checkboxes):

Enable .mp3 filterfilter_mediaplugin_enable_mp3

Default: Yes

Enable .swf filterfilter_mediaplugin_enable_swf

Default: No

As a default security measure, normal users should not be allowed to embed swf flash files.

Enable .mov filterfilter_mediaplugin_enable_mov

Default: Yes

Enable .wmv filterfilter_mediaplugin_enable_wmv

Default: Yes

Enable .mpg filterfilter_mediaplugin_enable_mpg

Default: Yes

Enable .avi filterfilter_mediaplugin_enable_avi

Default: Yes

Enable .flv filterfilter_mediaplugin_enable_flv

Default: Yes

Enable .ram filterfilter_mediaplugin_enable_ram

Default: Yes

Enable .rpm filterfilter_mediaplugin_enable_rpm

Default: Yes

Enable .rm filterfilter_mediaplugin_enable_rm

Default: Yes

Once this is enabled in Moodle, you’ll be set to go! In a web page, just follow the instructions in this video tutorial generously posted in the Moodle.org forums by Matt Campbell.
