Workshop Presos for SOSCON09
In anticipation of the SOSCON09 in Honey-Grove ISD—where I’ll be presenting two half-day sessions for teachers on Moodle, as well as a “geek” strand the following day—I’ve submitted a few workshop titles. I encourage you to do the same! Note, I don’t want to teach all of them…1-2 would be fun, especially the esoteric ones.
Here they are:
Keynote/Feature Presentations:
- Moodle Habitudes (45-50 min but can be adjusted down)
- Embracing Technology for Positive Change
- Be the Match
Hands On Sessions:
- Blog Your World!
- Social Bookmarking
- Building Your Academic Learning Network
- Collaborative Storytelling with Digital Tools
- Grabbing Video off the Web
- Setting Up UbuntuLinux for Dual Boot on a Mac (bring your Mac)
- Creating a Bootable UbuntuLinux Flash/Thumb Drive
- Backup, Restore Your MySQL Databases the Easy and Safe Way
- Backing Up and Imaging Your Computer with System Rescue CD
- Creating the Walled Garden - Using Free, Open Source Software to Create Safe, Teaching and Learning Environments
What really gets me excited is that I’ll have a chance to pick up some techie skills. Some of the sessions I’d really like to see include:
- Optimizing Your PHP/MySQL Server - This session would provide a hands-on overview of how to install popular cache tools (e.g., xcache) to speed up PHP/MySQL servers. I’d also like more information on how to speed up/optimize MySQL databases…stuff you have to pay $2000 for to learn from the MySQL people.
- FOG - This session would walk me through setup of a server and installation of the software, as well as customization of the client.
My one concern is that these sessions appeal more to technology administrators rather than the rank-in-file folks. That can have an isolating effect…“techies” over here, “regular folks” over there. A good conference bridges the gap, helping each group better understand the other and find value and points of reference they can use to learn.
